Set on the New York bank rather than the Canadian side, this view shows the American Falls, the smaller cataract that drops beside the larger Horseshoe Falls across the river in Ontario. New York created Niagara Falls State Park in 1885, the first state park in the nation, and by the 1910s the area drew steady crowds of sightseers, honeymooners and amateur photographers. Prints from this period record how visitors saw the gorge before hydroelectric diversions and later development altered the river's appearance. The record names no photographer, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of one of the country's most visited natural sites in its era.
