Few places in North America were as often pictured from the ground as Niagara Falls, so an aerial view from the early 1920s stands apart by showing the falls from above, with the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the New York side both visible in one frame. Photographs like this were made when airplanes were still a novelty for civilian sightseeing, and they gave viewers a sense of how the river, gorge and city fit together. The print was made by the firm Ronne & Washburn and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress collection.
