The view here looks upward at the American Falls from the base of the cliff, a vantage that shows how the water drops straight off the rock and breaks into spray before reaching the pool below. The Library of Congress dates the print to about 1923 or 1925, and its copyright notes point to a 1920s commercial photograph, likely made for sale as a souvenir or postcard subject. By that decade the American Falls had long been a major tourist destination on the New York side of the Niagara River, drawing visitors who came to walk the paths and boardwalks at the foot of the gorge. Low-angle shots like this one were popular because they conveyed the scale and force of the cataract.
