Rather than the familiar panorama from the bank, this engraving takes the viewer down to a ladder on the American side, placing the eye close to the rushing water at the foot of the cliffs. It reproduces a painting by William Henry Bartlett, an English topographical artist who traveled widely in North America in the 1830s and sketched its famous sights for British audiences. The plate was engraved by J.C. Bentley and published in London in 1839 by George Virtue, whose firm specialized in illustrated books and prints of foreign scenery. Such views helped shape how Victorian readers imagined Niagara as a sublime natural wonder.
