Niagara Falls seen from the Canadian shore is the angle that sets this print apart from the many American-side views on the same board, with the cataract and its spray set against the Horseshoe Falls. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that made popular hand-colored lithographs for the home market, published this view for a public that had already made Niagara one of the most visited natural wonders in North America. The firm's prints were often sold cheaply and framed in parlors, which is why a view like this could carry so much of the falls' reputation across the country. Its hand-coloring adds the blue-green water and foliage that the black-and-white originals could not show, so it is worth looking closely at how the colorist handled the mist.
