Few views of the falls from this period carry as precise a record as this one, which is set near Table Rock on the Canadian side and dated July 22, 1846. Table Rock was a ledge that jutted over the Horseshoe Falls, and by the 1840s it had become a favored vantage point for visitors who came to see the cataract up close. The view looks across the rushing water toward the American side, where the smaller American Falls sit separated by Goat Island. Images like this one helped shape how people back east and in Europe pictured the falls, long before photography made such scenes commonplace.
