Partly frozen cascades, with two figures standing before a glazed mass of ice, make this view of Niagara Falls unusual among its many photographs of the cataract. Winter ice built up along the rocks and spray at the falls, and in the early 1900s the site drew both tourists and camera operators eager to record the frozen scene. The date on the record is uncertain, given as 1900 with a question mark, so the print should be read as a turn-of-the-century record. The photographers' presence gives a sense of scale, showing how large the ice formations grew against the riverbank.
