Niagara Falls, where the Niagara River drops over an escarpment on the border between New York and Ontario, drew printmakers steadily through the 1840s. The date of about 1845 and the associated name Havell & Spearing are recorded as unverified, so both should be treated as provisional. Views like this helped turn the cataract into a major destination, and many travelers knew the scene first through images such as this one. Prints of the period typically stressed the scale of the falling water and the surrounding rock, shaping how viewers pictured the site.
