Here the subject is a bridge rather than the falls themselves: a span built across the Niagara gorge a short distance below the cataract, linking New York and Ontario. The bridge that replaced an earlier suspension crossing in the 1850s was a major engineering project of its day, and it carried both carriages and trains over the chasm. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued many hand-colored views of American scenery and progress, turned such feats into popular images that let buyers admire the structure and the dramatic gorge beneath it from home.
