This print advertises a rail connection that promised travelers both a view of Niagara Falls and a crossing of the gorge on a single trip, as its title, "The only rout via Niagara Falls & Suspension Bridge," makes plain. The suspension bridge it names was completed in 1855 under John A. Roebling and carried railway trains and carriages across the river gorge below the falls. Railroad companies of the period often used scenic views like this one to draw passengers in a crowded market, so the image works as both a picture of the landscape and a piece of travel advertising. It is dated about 1876.
