Here the falls are not the only attraction: a passenger train runs along the bank in the foreground, its smoke trailing over the water. The chromolithograph was produced by the American Oleograph Company, a firm known for inexpensive colored prints that were sold widely in the late nineteenth century and often hung in homes and businesses. Views like this combined two popular subjects of the era, the sublime scenery of Niagara and the spread of railroads that made such sights reachable for ordinary travelers. Look closely at the rail line and the small figures to see how the artist balanced technology against the natural wonder.
