Four trains share the frame at Little Falls, New York, where the New York Central's tracks run close beside the Mohawk River. The railroad commissioned the view around 1890 from the studio of William Henry Jackson, a photographer known for his western landscapes and his later railroad work. Albumen prints like this one were the standard photographic reproduction of the period, and the picture shows how crowded the main line through the valley had become by the end of the century. Its listing in Jackson's 1898 *catalog of the W.H. Jackson Views* suggests the firm regarded it as a showcase of the railroad's reach.
