Four separate locomotives share one sheet in this engraving, which the American Bank Note Company kept in an album of its own work, assembled by its president, A.G. Goodall, for the years 1874 to 1888. The firm was a leading maker of engraved securities at the time, and railroad stock and bond certificates of those decades often carried locomotive vignettes that signaled a line's strength. Grouping several engines together suggests a showcase of the company's skill in rendering iron, steam and smoke at fine detail.
