Few subjects of the 1880s better captured the spread of the railroad than trains crossing Mexico, and this print by W.H. Jackson shows the locomotives and cars that the era's expansion depended on. Jackson, better known for his western landscapes, traveled in Mexico in the early 1880s, when American and British capital was building lines to link Mexico City with the United States border, a connection completed around 1884. The date of about 1885 comes from an older caption card and has not been verified, so the exact moment of the exposure remains uncertain.
