This view is titled "The Look near San Jose," and its caption card identifies the scene as a railroad line in Mexico, where the track runs past a point the card calls "the Look." The photograph is credited to William Henry Jackson, an American photographer known for his western survey work and for images of Mexico made as railways expanded there in the 1880s and 1890s. The date of about 1895 is marked with a question mark, so it is an estimate. Still, the picture fits a period when American and Mexican rail lines were opening remote country to trade and travel, and it shows how engineers laid track through hilly terrain.
