Taken from the railroad station, this view looks out over San Leandro, a small community in Alameda County on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. Published around 1866, the picture survives only as one half of a stereograph pair from a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. Railroads reached the East Bay in the 1860s and turned farming towns like San Leandro into shipping points for grain and produce, so the scene captures a landscape being reshaped by new transportation. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two images would have merged into a single view with depth. The caption details come from an old card and have not been verified.
