Little Falls, in New York's Mohawk Valley, was a tight passage where the Mohawk River, the Erie Canal, and two rail lines had to share a narrow gorge. This view shows the West Shore Railroad running beside the canal, a pairing that reflects how crowded the valley's transportation routes had become by about 1890. The West Shore was built as a parallel line to the New York Central, which later leased it, so the scene captures the rivalry and consolidation shaping the region's rail network. The photograph is a large glass negative made by W.H. Jackson & Co., whose work for the Detroit Publishing Company documented American landscapes and industry for commercial sale.
