The trestle carried the South Side Railroad across Indian Town Creek just west of Petersburg, Virginia, a line that linked the city to Lynchburg and the interior. Photographer David B. Woodbury made this view in 1865, when the rail corridors around Petersburg had been fought over through the long siege and were central to the supply of Confederate forces defending the city. The image survives as a stereograph pair on two wet collodion glass plates, so the two halves were meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Woodbury died in 1866, and his wartime views record how the region's transportation network looked at the war's end.
