This 1864 stereograph shows a railway bridge spanning Platt Creek in the countryside near Knoxville, Tennessee. Union forces held Knoxville from late 1863, and the rail lines running through East Tennessee were important for moving supplies, which made bridges like this one vital to both armies. The picture exists as two side-by-side exposures, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made it using the wet collodion process on glass negatives.
