A pencil drawing of the presidential train crossing the Potomac Creek bridge records Abraham Lincoln's early April 1863 journey to review the Army of the Potomac. The army was then camped around Falmouth, across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg, still recovering from the bloody defeat there in December 1862. The Potomac Creek trestle was a vital link in the Union supply line, carrying railroad traffic from the Aquia Landing depot toward the front. The drawing is part of a Civil War collection given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
