The bridge in this view crossed the Orange & Alexandria Railroad in Virginia, a line that changed hands several times during the Civil War and was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt. Army engineers under Colonel Herman Haupt, a railroad man brought in to keep military supply lines running, repaired the structure, and the photograph shows it as it stood after that work. Wartime bridge building relied on fast, practical timber construction, which is part of what makes the scene worth a closer look. The print dates to 1865 but was made later, from the Library of Congress Civil War photograph collection.
