A locomotive on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad, photographed in Virginia in 1862, makes this view a record of a working line rather than a battlefield. The railroad ran southwest from Alexandria through Manassas Junction, a rail hub that changed hands several times during the war and was central to the Second Battle of Bull Run that August. This is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical wet-collodion glass negatives meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Such views were popular with the public during the war, and they show how dependent both armies were on the rail lines.
