A railroad battery stands in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in this 1862 view, a reminder of how much the city's rail lines mattered during the war. Petersburg sat south of Richmond and served as a junction for several railroads that carried supplies and troops to the Confederate capital, so guns placed near its tracks were guarding a vital link. The image survives as a glass stereograph negative made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate on the spot. Its maker, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and his negatives are among the early wartime records of the Virginia front.
