Made at City Point, Virginia, where a railroad yard and transports sat along the James River, this view survives as two glass stereograph halves meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, plus a variant plate of the same scene. The record credits James F. Gibson, born in 1828, and dates the view to 1861. City Point later became a major Union supply base, when rail lines and river transports moved troops and stores during the war. Wet collodion glass plates like these were the standard medium of the period, and their fragility helps explain why the set is worth noticing.
