City Point sat where the Appomattox River meets the James in southeastern Virginia, and a railroad ran inland from its landing toward Petersburg. This stereograph pair, two plates meant to be seen together through a viewer, shows the tracks and dock that linked the river landing to the rail line. City Point became a major Union supply base in 1864 and 1865, when Ulysses S. Grant made it his headquarters during the siege of Petersburg, so the record's 1861 date is worth reading with care. The pair was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a reminder that Civil War photographs were often attributed loosely before careful cataloging.
