Gallup, New Mexico, was a railroad town from its founding, and this view captures the tracks and yard that gave it life around 1908. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad had reached the area in the 1880s, and the town grew up as a supply and shipping point for coal mining and for trade with nearby Navajo and Zuni communities. Photographs like this one, deposited for copyright registration, record how a western rail yard looked in the early years of the twentieth century, with its tracks, rail buildings and the streets that ran alongside them.
