A heavy gun mounted on a railroad car, with its crew posed beside it, gives this stereograph its particular interest. Union forces used rail-borne artillery like this to bombard Confederate lines around Petersburg, Virginia, during the long siege of 1864 and 1865. Mounting a gun on rails let crews shift it along existing track rather than hauling it by teams over muddy roads, which mattered on a front that stretched for miles. The picture survives as a stereograph, two nearly identical plates made side by side so that a stereoscope would show them with depth, and its catalog record credits the War Photograph and Exhibition Company as publisher.
