The gun in this photograph is a 13-inch mortar nicknamed "Dictator," shown on a railroad car in front of Petersburg, Virginia. Union forces used such railway-mounted siege guns during the long siege of Petersburg, which lasted from June 1864 to April 1865, to bombard Confederate lines from positions behind their own trenches. The caption card gives no date, but the setting places the scene within that campaign. The photograph shows how the Army moved heavy artillery by rail so it could be shifted along the front.
