Eight members of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Canadian Pacific Railroad Division, pose together in this group portrait from about 1943. The Brotherhood, founded in 1925 under A. Philip Randolph, was the first all-Black union to win a charter from the American Federation of Labor, and its members, who worked as porters on sleeping cars, fought for fair wages and hours against the Pullman Company. The print's place among Randolph's papers points to the union's reach into Canada, where its members worked the rails alongside their American counterparts.
