Few railroad subjects were photographed as carefully as the dining car on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, shot on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate in the years between 1900 and 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this view, built a large catalog of American rail travel and scenery during that stretch, selling prints to tourists and railroads alike. Dining cars were then a relatively new comfort on long-distance trains, and the company's views often emphasized the polished woodwork, white linen and orderly service that set them apart from the rough coaches of earlier decades. The large glass negative captures that level of detail, which is why such plates remain useful to historians of travel and everyday life.
