Parlor cars like Pere Marquette Railroad car no. 30 were the premium passenger equipment of their day, offering armchairs and a lounge for travelers who paid extra for comfort. The Pere Marquette was formed in 1900 by consolidating several Michigan and Ohio lines, and its passenger trains carried travelers across the Great Lakes region. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, produced many such views for railroads and resort promoters, so the picture doubles as an advertisement for rail travel as much as a record of the equipment.
