Workers are shown laying the pipe beneath a railroad line and up a grade, a detail that captures the hard terrain the Big Inch crossed. The line was a 24-inch steel pipeline built during World War II to carry crude oil from the Texas Gulf Coast to refineries and markets on the East Coast, when German submarines were attacking tankers along the Atlantic seaboard. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation, headed by Jesse Jones, helped finance the project, which is why the photographs are grouped in his collection.
