Railroad photographs from this period usually show finished lines or stations, but this one puts a construction locomotive at the head of a long procession of men and oxen. Dated between 1890 and 1894 and captioned as railway work in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, it shows how new track was pushed forward with steam power and animal labor side by side. Across the empire in those years, much of the earthwork and hauling still depended on human muscle and draft animals. The photographer is not named in the record, and the caption details are unverified, so the scene is best read as a document of construction methods of the time.
