Lenin leans from a railway car with his cap raised toward a crowd of men gathered below. After the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, he traveled often by rail and spoke to workers and soldiers to build support for the new government during the early years of the Russian Civil War. Trains carried officials, troops, and news along lines that mattered to both the new government and its opponents. The date and subject come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
