Men work on a timber railroad bridge in northern Virginia, one of the many crossings the Union army rebuilt or repaired as it moved supplies by rail during the Civil War. The region's rail lines were repeatedly cut by Confederate raids and retreats, and Union engineers and laborers were often called on to replace burned or damaged spans quickly so that trains could keep running. The print is a salted paper photograph, an early process that was giving way to newer methods by the early 1860s, and its title was supplied by Library of Congress staff rather than the original photographer.
