Men sorting letters aboard a moving train are the focus here, a working arrangement that let the Post Office move mail across the country without waiting for it to reach a station. Railway Mail Service cars were fitted with racks and pigeonholes so clerks could sort pouches by destination while the train ran, and by the early twentieth century this system carried a large share of the nation's mail. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in these years, produced many views of federal work, and this print is one of its numbered series. Look closely at the cramped interior and the clerks' concentration, which show how demanding the job was.
