A group from the Association of American Electric Railway men posed with President Calvin Coolidge on February 17, 1925, in this glass negative from the National Photo Company. In the 1920s, electric streetcar and interurban lines carried a large share of American city travel, and the industry's leaders were a significant interest in Washington policy before buses and automobiles took over many of those routes. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, documented official visits and public events of this kind. The surface streaks and blemishes on the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
