From the driver's seat, this view puts the viewer at the controls of a Washington streetcar rather than on the sidewalk, which sets it apart from the station and platform scenes elsewhere on this board. The Washington Railway and Electric Company ran the capital's streetcar lines for much of the early twentieth century, and the Washington studio Harris & Ewing, founded in 1905, recorded the city's streets, transit and public life for newspapers and clients. Views made from the motorman's position are less common than platform shots, so the framing is worth studying for its record of street traffic and track layout.
