The Mount Washington Cog Railway, which climbs the steep flanks of New Hampshire's Mount Washington, is the setting here, with one of its red cars shown against bare, rocky ground. The line opened in 1869 and was the first mountain cog railway in the world, using a toothed rack between the rails to haul passenger cars up grades too steep for ordinary wheels to grip. Its cars were built to stay level as the track tilted, a feature that made the ride possible on the mountain's slopes. The railway remains a popular attraction, and views like this one show the rugged terrain that made the engineering so difficult.
