A steam cog railway train climbs a steep grade beneath a mountain summit observation deck, the rack-and-pinion system visible as it works its way toward the top. Cog railways like this one were built in the late 19th century to reach peaks too steep for ordinary adhesion railways, using a toothed rail that meshes with a gear under the locomotive. Lines of this kind drew tourists who wanted views from high ground, and the summit stations they served became landmarks in their own right. Watch for the locomotive's boiler and the angle of the track, which show how much effort the climb demanded.
