A cog railway climbs slopes too steep for ordinary wheels by using a toothed rack laid between the rails, which a cogwheel on the locomotive grips like a gear. The method dates to the mid-19th century, and the Rigi line in Switzerland, opened in 1871, is among the best-known early mountain examples. In the United States, the Mount Washington Cog Railway had opened in 1869 to carry passengers up the New Hampshire peak. Worth noticing in a picture like this are the rack rails, the steeply graded track bed and the sturdy engines built to hold their footing on a grade.
