A cog railway climbs slopes that ordinary track could not handle. A toothed rack rail laid between the running rails meshes with a cogwheel under the locomotive, so the engine can grip the line on grades where steel wheels alone would slip. Lines like this spread through the mountains of Switzerland and the eastern United States in the mid-1800s, and the Mount Washington line in New Hampshire, opened in 1869, remains one of the best known. Look for the rack rail, the cog drive and the steepness of the grade, which together explain most of the engineering behind the line.
