A cog railway climbs grades that would defeat an ordinary locomotive, using a toothed rack rail laid between the running rails and a pinion gear on the engine that meshes with it. Engineers first built such lines for steep mountain routes, and the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, which opened in 1869, and the Rigi line in Switzerland, which followed in 1871, were among the earliest. Their small engines, slow pace and exposed trestles made them a striking part of the railroad landscape, and they remain working attractions today.
