A toothed rack laid between the running rails sets a cog railway apart from ordinary track. The locomotive's cogwheel meshes with that rack, letting the train climb grades too steep for friction alone to hold. The design opened mountain summits to tourists and freight in the late 19th century, and the Mount Washington line in New Hampshire, which began service in 1869, is among the best-known examples. Worth noticing is how the whole arrangement favors climbing power over speed, with the rack and the engine's gearing doing work that wheels on smooth rail could not.
