Cog railways use a toothed rack rail laid between the running rails, which lets a locomotive climb slopes too steep for ordinary wheel-on-rail adhesion. This view shows that central rack running up a mountainside, the defining feature of the system. Railroads of this type were built in the late 1800s to carry tourists and freight to high summits, and the toothed track made it possible to haul trains up grades that would otherwise have been out of reach. Look closely at the rack and the ties beneath it, since their arrangement is what set these lines apart from conventional railroads.
