Few railway platforms of the steam era were as crowded with rolling stock as the one pictured here, where a maroon passenger train waits beside a steam locomotive. Passenger cars in that rich paint were a common sight on American lines around the turn of the twentieth century, when railroads competed on comfort and appearance as much as on speed. Platforms like this one were the working heart of a town, where mail, freight and travelers converged several times a day. Pictures of such scenes preserve details that timetables never record, from the hand-lettered signs to the crowds waiting along the boards.
