The record names a locomotive called General Haupt, which was seized, or "confiscated," during the Civil War, when both armies took rolling stock from rail lines they captured or overran. The name points to Herman Haupt, the Union army's rail engineer, who ran military railroads and rebuilt bridges and lines in Virginia and Maryland in 1862 and 1863. Engines taken this way were often pressed into service on captured tracks, so the picture records a moment when control of the rails, and the trains running on them, changed hands. Railroad images from this period are useful for seeing the locomotives, cars, and depots that wartime supply depended on.
