The Semmering Railway, shown here at Breitenstein on the Styrian side of the pass, was one of the first major mountain railways in Europe. Engineer Carl von Ghega designed its curves, tunnels, and viaducts to climb the Alps without the steep gradients that rack-and-pinion systems would have required, and it opened in 1854. The photochrom process used for this print, a color lithographic method developed in Switzerland, was popular in the 1890s for documenting scenic and industrial sites across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold these prints in America through its catalogues.
