The title places this view at the railway station in Lille, a major rail junction in northern France near the Belgian border. The print is a photochrom, a color process that used multiple stone lithographic plates to tint a black-and-white photograph, with the color often applied by hand. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in its 1905 catalog of French architecture and sites, which gives a sense of how railway buildings were presented to American buyers as examples of modern French travel. The record dates the original photograph to roughly the 1890s, a period when stations were central to how towns and cities projected their growth.
