Two Eastern Bloc leaders are caught on the platform in this 1965 print: Hungarian Prime Minister János Kádár and Polish First Secretary Władysław Gomulka, greeting one another as the Hungarian delegation arrives in Warsaw. The station setting ties the picture to the logistics of Cold War diplomacy, when leaders traveled by rail and air to meet for Warsaw Pact business. The Warsaw Treaty Organization, formed in 1955 as the Soviet-led counterweight to NATO, held its political consultations in member capitals, and Warsaw hosted several of them. Photographs like this one were distributed by agencies such as Eastphoto, which sold images of Communist-bloc officials to Western press and archives.
